Developmental Characteristics of Children Aged 60–72 Months

Children aged 60–72 months, who are in the final stages of preschool education, show significant progress in their physical, cognitive, emotional, and social abilities. During this period, as motor skills develop, independence, problem-solving, and language abilities also increase rapidly.

Psychomotor Development:
Children begin to move with greater coordination and control. They can walk on a balance beam, jump rope, throw a ball accurately toward a target, and perform various rhythmic movements. As their pencil grip improves, they can copy letters and numbers and enhance their drawing skills.

Self-Care Skills:
With a growing sense of independence, children can meet their basic needs such as personal hygiene and dressing without assistance. They can eat independently, brush their teeth, button their clothes, and choose suitable clothing according to the weather.

Social and Emotional Development:
Children become more successful in adapting to social rules and understanding their roles within a group. They can participate in structured games, cooperate with others, express their emotions, and show empathy by understanding how others feel.

Cognitive Development:
Children in this age group better understand number concepts and begin to perform basic mathematical operations. Their memory strengthens, enabling them to recall and describe past events, understand cause-and-effect relationships, and narrate events in sequence. They can recognize symbols used in daily life and distinguish between right and left.

Language Development:
Children’s speech develops rapidly, allowing them to form more complex sentences. They can explain their thoughts using cause-and-effect reasoning, narrate events in order, and develop a sense of humor by making simple jokes. Their vocabulary expands, and they begin to understand abstract concepts more effectively.

Creating appropriate educational environments during this period supports children’s independence, confidence, and school readiness.
